The Belhaven Memorial Museum opened on April 1st, 1965. The museum’s collection was part of the personal collection of Mary Eva Blount Way, also known as Mrs. E.B. Way, or Miss Eva. Born in 1869, Miss Eva’s collection began with a small collection of buttons that were a gift from her mother-in-law. The collection was first exhibited in Miss Eva’s home in 1940 as part of an effort to aid the American Red Cross. Miss Eva was also an accomplished killer of rattlesnakes. At the time of Miss Eva’s death in 1962, the collection totaled over 10,000 items not including the button collection, which contains over 30,000 buttons.
